Baby Cake Number 3

I decided to try making a diaper cake differently this time.  The recipients of the diaper cakes I've made in the past (see my first one here and blanket wrapped one here) have loved their gifts, but I always felt bad they had to take off a rubber band and unroll each diaper to use them, I wanted to make it a little easier this time.  I just did some guessing and reworking, and it all turned out good!

Supplies: ribbons, johnsons travel pack, baby washcloths, artificial flowers-stems cut off, tape, 42 size 2 pampers, clothes
1. Lay the diapers out in a line, overlapping evenly.  These had images at the top, so i just had the next diaper start at the bottom of the design.
2.  I folded up the clothes the width of the diapers and included that on top before I started rolling...then just start rolling it inwards on itself.

3. Add more diapers and clothes to make the "layers" different sizes.  Secure with a rubber band (making only one rubber band to take off than one on each diaper!) and stack on top of one another.

4. Cove the rubber bands with decorative ribbons,
 add in flowers and goodies,
Tah-dah!

It's sitting on top of a cute magnetic memo board that can be used in the nursery, and I can't wait to give it to the mommy to be!

Weekend Wrapup

This weekend I...
went to my parents home and spent the weekend with my family and my sweet new niece,

made this birthday cake for my Pops (don't judge...I was working with limited supplies ok! : D ),

I painted my nails with some crackle nail polish.. First you put on a base color (I chose lime green), then paint the crackle color on top (I used black) and it crackles on its own and the base color shows through.  Love the concept...not so in love with my color choices (it kind of reminds me of Monster Energy Drinks haha)!

On the way home we saw this awesome car,

and the best part about it was the temperature was in the 60's the whole weekend!  I LOVE cooler weather...too bad it's already back up in the 80's today!   Just a glimpse of what's to come!

Hope you had a great weekend too!  I'll be back later today with some of my favorite finds for the week!

Baby's Here!

I mentioned Sunday I was a new aunt, and it's awesome! After 13 hours of labor and 1hour 45minutes of pushing, a beautiful 8lb 13oz 23inch girl was born! There's some drama with the "baby daddy" I won't get into, but because of that you'll just have to do with pictures of her feet. Believe me though, she's cute, and it's given me an even more serious case of baby fever!

Dresser Makeover

Moving into a house when I was just out of college and my husband was just out of an apartment meant we had a lot of empty space! Luckily our family was super helpful and nice in giving us furniture they had from here, there, and everywhere; but it left us with quite a hodge podge of everything in the rooms. Over the last year we've gotten around to slowly but surely filling the rooms with new furniture we've bought, but some rooms (like the almost never used guest rooms) I just couldn't justify spending lots of money on. My mom gave us a chest of drawers that, while solid wood, was looking a bit rough and outdated. Sorry I forgot to take before pictures, but I did manage to snap this pic of the drawer right before I sanded it.

Picture old maple wood dresser with very tarnished brass hardware.

I hand sanded it to make it a little rough, then used a can of grey paint I found in the "OOPS!" section at Home Depot. After two coats of paint and some new hardware, it now looks like this:

Much better right!

The knobs are from World Market.

The picture hanging above it is from Peir 1.

Oh, and on the wall perpendicular to where the dresser is are these:

They're actually placemats from Kohl's, but they're hard wood pictures and are mounted on cork; they look like paintings in person. I took one of them to Home Depot for a color match, and the lady at the door ask me if I had painted them or if someone else had! We're planning on using this room as a nursery eventually (hopefully), so I thought it was great decor and would work for babies as well!

There's still LOTS of work to do in that room, but it'll probably stay just like it is (give or take a few knick knacks to place on the dresser) until baby comes along, or there's a need to make it into a "complete" room.

P.S. If anyone is wondering the wall color is agreeable grey by Sherwin Williams...we just painted it about a month ago and up until then it was the "lovely" builders beige color!

Baby Cakes

I made my first attempt at a diaper cake today for my husbands' best friends' wife (that's not a long description or anything)! It's not perfect but I think it's pretty good for a first try! The best thing was I was able to complete it in just about an hour while the baby I watch was napping!

Supplies:
  • 42 Size 2 diaper ($8)
  • 2 empty graduate cheese puff containers (already had those on hand thanks to baby mentioned before, but if not, they're about the size of a full toilet paper roll)
  • 2 Pacifiers ($1)
  • Ribbon ($2.50, still have some left over)
  • Fabric glue ($2.50, still have TONS left)
  • Silk Flowers ($1)
  • Johnson's Travel Pack, included travel size baby shampoo, body wash, lotion, baby powder, and diaper rash cream ($2.50)
  • Stuffed Animal ($1)
  • Pizza Pan ($1)
  • Baby Blanket ($1)
  • Rubber Bands ($1)

The pizza pan was for a sturdy base for the cake, and I wrapped the baby blanket around it to cover it. It's a 3 tier cake, the bottom using about 20 diapers (rolled up and secured individually with rubber bands), wrapped around the cheese puff containers to create/hold the shape. I think maybe next time I would use actual gifts for the center too, but I didn't have any on hand and I wanted to make the cake now!!! The top tier is 7 diapers so that means the center tier must be 15 diapers. I then played around with the flowers and gifts until I liked the way it looked. TAH-DAH...

Not too shabby if I do say so myself, especially for only about $20! I also have a 31 Bags thermal tote with the baby's initial monogramed on it (I thought it could be used as a diaper bag, or be placed in a diaper bag with ice pack to keep formula and food cold) and a pack of diaper wipes to go along with it, but they overpower the cake so I'll just wrap those seperately I think. So what do you think? Anything you can think of to make it better or tips you more experienced diaper cakers out there have?
